Suggested 5-day plan
Day 1, Dharamshala and McLeodganj: the Dalai Lama temple complex, Bhagsunag waterfall, Naddi viewpoint and the HPCA cricket stadium.
Day 2, Kangra valley: Norbulingka Institute, Kangra Fort and Brajeshwari Devi, or Chamunda Devi on the way out.
Day 3, to Dalhousie: about 120 km, 4 hours. Evening walk at Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk.
Day 4, Khajjiar and on to Amritsar: Khajjiar's meadow (about 22 km from Dalhousie) in the morning, then about 190 km down to Amritsar via Pathankot. Golden Temple at night.
Day 5, Amritsar: Jallianwala Bagh and the old city, then the Beating Retreat ceremony at Attari–Wagah in the evening.
Good to know
- The Wagah ceremony starts in the late afternoon, and its format and access have changed in recent years. Check the current status before you go; we drop you as close as vehicles may go.
- Dalhousie roads are narrow in the town centre. We stop at the nearest open point and wait.
- Prefer to start from Chandigarh or Delhi? Reverse the loop: Amritsar first, then Dalhousie and Dharamshala.
