Shimla to Dehradun by road
| Distance | Driving time | Route |
|---|---|---|
| About 225 km | 6.5 hours | via Nahan and Paonta Sahib |
Instead of going down to Chandigarh, this route turns off at Kumarhatti and heads south through the Sirmaur hills to Nahan, a quiet old princely town. From Nahan the road descends to Paonta Sahib on the Yamuna, where the riverside gurudwara is a good place to stretch your legs, and then crosses into Uttarakhand for the last hour to Dehradun.
Dehradun works well as the start of a Mussoorie, Rishikesh or Char Dham trip, and Jolly Grant airport has flights to most metros. The Nahan road is quieter than the plains highway, with fewer trucks. Fuel up in Solan or Nahan, as stations are sparse on parts of this road.
